Lugol’s Iodine
Amazing Health Rediscoveries
Symptoms of iodine deficiency include muscle cramps, cold hands and feet, proneness to weight gain, poor memory, constipation, depression and headaches, edema, myalgia, weakness, dry skin, and brittle nails. Sources include most sea foods, (ocean fish, but not fresh fish, shellfish, especially oysters), unrefined sea salt, kelp and other sea weeds, fish broth, butter, pineapple, artichokes, asparagus, dark green vegetables and eggs. Certain vegetables, such as cabbage and spinach, can block iodine absorption when eaten raw or unfermented and are called goitrogens. But eating fish won’t give you iodine in mg amounts. To get 13.8 mg iodine, you would have to eat 10-20 pounds of fish per day.
Available here!Iodine is needed in microgram amounts for the thyroid, mg amounts for breast and other tissues, and can be used therapeutically in gram amounts. –Dr. David Miller
True health returns when the body’s natural working order and chemistry are restored by detoxifying and eliminating all foreign substances from the body organs that hamper their natural function.
Lugol’s Iodine: The Body’s Immunity Needs Iodine
The body’s need for iodine is known, as well as its deficiency in relation to disease. Years ago, we obtained sufficient iodine from our food, however, now food and farmland are iodine-deficient, thus weakening one of the primary mechanisms of defense. A primary cause of disease/illness in the body is pathogen microorganisms. With sufficient iodine in the thyroid, pathogens are made weaker and most are destroyed as they pass through. But the vast majority of people do not have enough iodine in their body for the thyroid to function optimally. Iodine deficiency can easily be reversed with supplementation to negate many of its health conditions and disorders.
Eliminate Loads of Mucus Gel with the Most Powerful Lugol’s Enema
Nature’s protective mechanism is to secrete mucus in the colon to protect against what you ate, drank, or smoked. But, it was designed for nature’s pure food and only occasional use. Today, most everything we eat (processed food, milk, milk products) causes mucus to be formed. The protective mechanism is forced to work continuously producing and abundance of mucus with little chance of it being eliminated. Layer piles upon layer, mucus thickens, becomes gel like, often hardens like rubber, and holds onto fecal matter.
A Lugol’s Iodine enema will rid you of this abundance of mucus buildup. It will bring about a more unobstructed, mucus/trash-free, clean colon for maximum nutrient absorption, elimination of toxemia and a restoration and healing of the intestinal walls.
Lugol’s iodine is distinctive with an amazing property to attach to everything! In an enema, it will attach to loads of gel-like mucus stuck to the intestinal walls and break down remaining, embedded, decaying fecal matter. Prepare yourself to see loads of mucus, mucus gel and imbedded trash in the toilet. Balls of gel have often formed that are golf ball size. For some, the initial enemas may be slightly uncomfortable for a few minutes as you feel Lugol’s attaching to mucus and an urgent need for elimination. You can feel your bowels wanting to excrete the mucus buildup and you may go to the toilet 3 or 4 times within a few hours and see loads of mucus. When it all comes out, relief is extraordinary and exhilarating. Initially, do 3,4, or 5 enemas the first month to eliminate the mucus accumulation. Then, maintenance about once a month or as often as you feel is needed.
As you already know: death begins in the colon!
Destroys Vicious Stomach Bacteria
Lugol’s taken internally in addition to replenishing the thyroid, also brings amazing relief and a calming, soothing, peaceful state to anxiety and a manic stage. It destroys vicious stomach bacteria, (especially salmonella), against gas, bloating, indigestion, heartburn. Doomed are harmful bacteria and parasite eggs. It is 100% safe (except if allergic) to take regularly, but only use as needed.
Most of us are Deficient in Iodine
Lugol’s iodine is old-fashioned iodine and years ago was used for treating various illnesses. It has a distinctive trait – it hangs up on everything. In the stomach, it attaches to vicious salmonella, bacteria, parasite eggs and they are doomed. The thyroid is the organ most capable of absorbing iodine. Pathogenic microorganisms, the primary cause of disease, are made weaker and most are killed as they pass through the thyroid, provided, it has its normal supply of iodine. Clinical studies show that very few people have enough iodine in their thyroid to function optimally. This deficiency has occurred in the 20th century because of chlorine in drinking water, the alteration of natural food sources and modern farming practices. Aggravating the problem is that the body does not conserve iodine, therefore, we must get a regular supplemental intake to maintain optimal health.
The Thyroid, Iodine and Disease Prevention
The role of the thyroid gland has been understood for some time now. Although conventional medicine places emphasis on its contribution to regulating the body’s metabolism, and equally important role is its contribution to the immunological health and body.
This organ’s thyroid cells are the ones in the body capable of absorbing iodine, an important mineral nutrient and potent germ killer. Though 80% of the less than 25 mg. of iodine in the body is found elsewhere primarily in muscle and bone, the thyroid has a concentration of iodine that is over 1000 times greater than that found in muscle tissue. In terms of immunology, the thyroid gland acts a gatekeeper: every 17 minutes all the blood in the body passes through the thyroid, where this gland’s secretion of iodine kills germs that have come into the body (through absorption of food in the digestive tract, skin injury, respiratory intake, etc.) Pathogenic micro-organisms, the primary causative agent disease for the body, are made weaker during their passage through the thyroid gland. With every “17 minute passage” they are made still weaker until most are killed, provided the thyroid has its normal supply of iodine.
We know from clinical study that few people have anywhere near enough iodine in their body for the thyroid to function optimally. Three disturbing trends initiated in the 20th century made this collective deficiency inevitable: (1) the introduction of chlorine – another halogen, like iodine – used in drinking water, pools, and as a ubiquitous cleaning agent in industry, etc. – which displaces iodine. (2) the alteration of the Western diet to reduce natural foods sources of iodine, and (3) farming practices designed to increase crop yield which have lead to reduced iodine content in many foods. Aggravating this diminishing source issue is the fact that the body does not conserve iodine the way it does iron. We must receive a regular dietary supplemental intake in order to maintain optimal health.
A History of Lugol’s
Lugol’s Iodine (also called “Lugol’s solution”) was first developed by the French physician, Jean Lugol, in 1829. It is a transparent brown liquid consisting of 10 parts potassium iodide (K1) to 5 parts iodine to 85 parts of (distilled) water. It is an effective bactericide and fungicide and, in fact, was, for the better part of a century, a common antiseptic (though it has laboratory uses separate and apart from any medical application). Lugol’s and similar iodine solutions probably fell out of favor in the last half of the 20th century due to combination of economics and esthetics: first, it is so cheap to make that it cannot compare to “cleaner” value-added antiseptics with more marketing muscle; and secondly, it will stain clothes and will even temporarily stain skin when used topically to treat a wound. The internal applications of various iodine solutions have been published and discussed for well over a century.
Iodine Deficiency

Dr. David Brownstein has a US medical practice dealing primarily with thyroid patients. He has been quite successful treating hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism with the iodine/iodide supplement Iodoral that is available over the Internet without prescription. Dr. Brownstein believes that the usual thyroid medication prescribed by doctors is the wrong treatment because it does not deal with the underlying iodine deficiency problem.
All cells in the body need iodine for proper functioning. All glands (thyroid, adrenal, etc.) especially need iodine for the production of hormones. Dr. Brownstein believes that iodine deficiency is a major cause of breast cancer and other diseases of the reproductive organs such as ovarian, uterus and prostate cysts and cancers. Iodine levels in US soil have fallen 50 per cent over the past 50 years and soil in the US is deficient in iodine. The Great Lakes region has some of lowest soil iodine levels in the world and this results in high levels of cancers related to iodine deficiency.
Dr. Brownstein has been quite successful in treating fibrocystic breast disease (cysts in the breast) with iodine/iodine supplementation. In one case a 37 year-old woman with severe fibrocystic breast disease was completely cured after supplementing with 50 mgs of iodine a day for two months. Women with large breasts need more iodine than women with smaller breasts. Other medical authorities agree that iodine deficiency can lead to fibrocystic breast disease and/or ovarian cysts.
Iodine can similarly reduce uterine fibroids and one of the first conventional medical treatments for severe fibroids was to paint the uterus with iodine. Some other medical conditions associated with iodine deficiency are goiters, Graves’ Disease, Hashimoto’s Disease, fatigue and impaired immune system function. Iodine deficiency during pregnancy can lead to miscarriages and reduced IQ in surviving offspring. The World Health Organization says that iodine deficiency is the largest single cause of mental retardation. Iodine also detoxifies the body by removing mercury, fluorides, chlorides, and bromides.
If iodine/iodide are so crucial in the body, why hasn’t there been more research studies published? Dr. Brownstein believes that because iodine cannot be patented there is no incentive for the drug companies to perform the research.
Iodized salt and the iodine supplements usually found in health food stores contain the iodide form of iodine. Dr. Brownstein has had little success treating patients with only iodide. The supplement Iodoral contains both the iodide (reduced) and iodine (oxidized) forms of iodine because the body needs both forms. The US RDA for iodine is 150 mcg. Iodoral contains 100 times (12.5 mgs) the RDA’s requirement of iodine/iodide. It seems the conventional medical establishment again has grossly underestimated the amount of a nutrient needed for good health. According to Dr. G. E. Abraham, “Of all the elements known so far to be essential for health, iodine is the most misunderstood and the most feared. Yet, it is by far the safest of all the trace elements known to be essential for human health. It is the only trace element that can be ingested safely in amounts up to 100,000 times the RDA. For example, potassium iodide has been prescribed safely to pulmonary patients in daily amounts of up to 6.0 gm/day, in large groups of such patients for several years. It is important however to emphasize that this safety record only applies to inorganic nonradioactive iodine/iodide, not to organic iodine-containing drugs and to radioiodides.”
Restoring Iodine Supplementation Easily and Cheaply
The role of iodine in human nutrition is well established as are its deficiency diseases and the conditions to which it deficiency can contribute (i.e. goiter, cretinism, hypothyroidism, etc.) The amount of iodine necessary to void diagnosable deficiency is quite small. Below, for example, we provide the U.S Recommended Daily Allowance for iodine in mcg.’s.
Infants | 40-50 |
Ages 1-3 | 70 |
Ages 4-6 | 90 |
Ages 7-10 | 120 |
Ages 11 or older | 150 |
Pregnant Women | 175 |
Lactating Women | 200 |
Originally, people would get all their iodine from dietary sources: soybeans, cauliflower, peanuts, etc. But much agricultural farmland is now iodine deficient, leading to reduced levels in iodine in foods. Other areas, such as the Great Lakes region in the U.S., are naturally deficient in iodine — a fact that lead to the massive goiter. In 1924, iodine was first added to table salt as a preventative measure, and by 1940, the practice was in general consumer use. Using Iodized salt has no doubt, been effective: It contains about 76 mcg. of iodide per gram. The average person consumes at least 3 grams of iodized salt daily, exceeding the RDA for iodine by 150 mcg. However, iodized salt has many other drawbacks: It contains aluminum and processing chemical residues, its overuse creates the well-documented conditions associates with high sodium intake and sodium-potassium imbalance, etc.
With treated salt’s convenient little addition to the Western diet, its integration accelerated by the explosive expansion of fast food outlets, at which table salts’ cup doth overflow, one might think we have the last of iodine deficiency. Hardly – enter “halogen displacement” and the effects of chlorine intake on the body’s small reserve of iodine. Table salt, by definition, is the mostly “sodium chloride” (what chemists call a “halide” or a halogen tied to a mineral, making it a “salt” of a halogen”). Although bound to sodium, the use of table salt as a delivery vehicle for iodine ironically presents a situation where you ingest far more chlorine, which displaces iodine, than you do the iodine itself. You see chlorine, which has been used extensively since 1904 to control microbes in public drinking water, belongs to the same class of elements as iodine: the “halogens” or elements that are one step removed from the “inert elements” (or gases) because they have just one electron missing from their outer shell to make it inert (non reactive). This makes them quite readily active.
The mechanism behind “halogen displacement” was probably best described by J.C. Jarvis, M.D. (Folk Medicine, Henry Holt and Co., 1958, HB, pg 136) who wrote: “The clinical activity of any one of these four halogens is in inverse proportion to its atomic weight. This means that any one of the four can displace the element with a higher atomic weight, but cannot displace an element with a lower atomic weight. For example, fluorine can displace chlorine, bromine and iodine because fluorine has a lower atomic weight than the other three. Similarly, chlorine can displace bromine and iodine because they both have a higher atomic weight. Likewise, bromine can displace iodine from the body because iodine has a higher atomic weight. But a reverse order is not possible. A knowledge of this well-known chemical law brings us to a consideration of the addition of chlorine to our drinking water as a purifying agent. We secure drinking water that is harmful to the body not because of its harmful germ content but because the chlorine content now causes the body to lose the much needed iodine…”
To counter the effects of the iodine loss, Dr. Jarvis recommended various methods including: (1) Eating foods rich in iodine: food from the ocean, radishes, asparagus, carrots, tomatoes, spinach, rhubarb, potatoes, peas, strawberries, mushroom, lettuce, bananas, cabbage, egg yolk, and onions; (2) Painting a small area of the with the tincture of iodine; and (3) taking preparations known to be rich in iodine, including cod liver oil, kelp tablets….
But he was particularly keen on the power of Lugol’s iodine for treating various illnesses, including colds and flu, for countering the effects of stress: “Supposing you do not follow the suggestions outlined above and find some weeks from the pressures of your private and your business life are causing you to lose the ability to bounce back. Then you should add a drop of Lugol’s solution iodine to your glass of apple or grape juice at breakfast, or you may take it in the mixture of apple cider vinegar and water. The point is that the potassium in the solution (Lugol’s is 5% potassium iodine) blocks off the body mechanism that organizes for aggressive action, releasing its hold on the body and the building up and storing of body reserves. When working under pressure, include the Lugol’s solution dose each day until the period of pressure passes. If it should happen that your body becomes saturated with iodine, you will find that there is an increase of moisture in the nose. If this occurs, omit the iodine until the nose is normal.”
Lugol’s Iodine Instructions
ENEMA – Use a Fleet enema bottle. Empty out contents, wash out with hot water. Wipe off lubricated tip thoroughly with a dry paper towel and wash with hot water. Do not use any detergent! Fill up bottle with room temp water poured through a coffee filter. Preferable to boil water in glass container and let cool. Add up to 1/2 teaspoon of Lugol’s. After a few enemas, it can be increased to one teaspoon. Avoid spilling, it stains.
To lubricate tip, use only olive oil, butter, vitamin E gel. Do not use any commercial chemical lubricants. Do the enema. Hold it in for 5 to 15 minutes or as long as you can. Initially, you may only be able to hold it in for a few minutes. It is preferable to lie down. Expect loads of mucus, gel, trash, undigested food and several movements within hours as mucus keeps coming out. If you’re mucus loaded up, repeat enema daily for 2, 3 or 4 days. Then, once a week for 4 weeks until mucus/trash free. Maintenance, one enema a month.
INTERNALLY – For gas, bloating, indigestion, stomach problems, food or salmonella poisoning, use 6 drops in 1/2 glass of water, 2 or 3 times a day, for a few days. Take after meals and at bedtime. For severe cases, it can be increased to 12 drops. You’ll feel results shortly. For anxiety/mood swings, etc., or for a more relaxed and peaceful state, take 6 drops in water once or twice during the day. In general, 6 drops can usually end it all for a mild case of salmonella poisoning. Though very safe, use only when needed.
THYROID PROBLEM – Many problems, in general, can be attributed to iodine deficiency. 75 years ago, Lugol’s iodine was commonly used by doctors. 2/3 of a teaspoon (60 drops) was the standard dose for thyroid disease. You can start with 6 to 12 drops a day in water for about one week and you will notice improvement. Then it is advisable to consult with your doctor.
IODINE DEFICIENCY – Take about 2, 3 or 4 drops in water daily for about a month. Can be increased to 6 drops daily if needed. After you’ve replenished iodine, then take twice a week.
MOUTHWASH AND CLEANSER – Great as a mouthwash/mouth cleanser against bacteria, fungus, mucus, virus, coated tongue, etc. Use 3 to 6 drops in glass of water, gargle, do not drink, spit out in glass and observe what comes out. Your mouth will feel refreshed and great.
Lugol’s Iodine will only be available in 2 oz. bottles of 4% potassium iodide and 2% iodine (94% distilled water) according to new DEA regs.
